Understanding water filtration requires mastering the microscopic scale. Contaminants in drinking water span six orders of magnitude—from coarse 100-micron silt particles down to dissolved 0.0001-micron heavy metal ions and PFAS molecules.

1. The Hierarchy of Filtration Sequencing

High-performance filtration systems are always built as multi-stage cascades. Placing a dense sub-micron membrane directly against raw tap water causes instant fouling. The standard engineered hierarchy includes:

  • Stage 1 (5 - 20 Micron Sediment): Intercepts coarse sand, rust flake, and pipe scale to protect subsequent sensitive media.
  • Stage 2 (5 Micron Carbon Pre-Filter): Adsorbs chlorine and volatile compounds that would otherwise chemically degrade polyamide RO membranes.
  • Stage 3 (0.0001 Micron RO Membrane): Performs molecular-level cross-flow separation, sending purified permeate to the faucet and rejecting concentrated brine to drain.

2. Nominal vs. Absolute Micron Ratings

When reading filter specifications, note whether the pore size is Nominal (captures roughly 85% of particles at that size) or Absolute (captures 99.9%+ of particles at that stated threshold). For microbiological protection (cysts and bacteria), always require an Absolute 1-micron or sub-micron rating.
